Teaching/Student Services Positions


Candidates for teaching/student services positions should:

1. Download Portland Public Schools’ Teacher/Student Services Personnel Application.

2. Complete all sections of the application form. Do NOT use "See Resume".

3. Attach a letter of application and a current resume. Portland Schools receives hundreds of applications. Your letter of application and resume are the means by which you can distinguish yourself from other applicants.

4. Include a copy of your Maine teacher certification. If you are not currently certified in Maine and need further information regarding Maine certification requirements, check the Department’s website. Information about the certification process can be accessed by clicking "Certification" from the site index or you may contact the Certification Office at:

Maine has established minimum scores on the National Teachers Exam for those seeking initial certification in Maine. A one year conditional certificate may be issued to otherwise certifiable candidates pending completion of this requirement.

All offers of employment are contingent on eligibility for appropriate Maine certification.

5. Request forwarding of an official college or university transcript(s). In the interim, attach a copy of your transcripts.

6. Make three (3) copies of the reference form. The reference form is three (3) pages. Complete the applicant portion and forward the form to each of your references.

7. If you have no formal teaching experience, include a copy of your student teaching evaluation and request your supervising classroom teacher to complete one of your reference forms. If you have formal teaching experience, include documentation of successful practice as a teacher.

Since only complete applications will be considered, please double check to make sure that you have included all required materials.

An application will be considered complete when all materials requested above (including 2 of the 3 reference forms included in the application) have been received. Candidates must adhere to stated deadlines if specified.
